Introduction

Development history of The School of Education can be dated back to 1980 when The Research Office of Higher Education, HUST was established. Led by the older scholars, including Zhu Jiusi, Tu Youguang, Cai Keyong, We Fuxiang etc., faculty of The School of Education has laid a solid foundation in serving holistic development of HUST, and The School of Education was qualified for operating Master’s Program and Doctorial Program in Higher Education in 1986 and 1996, respectively. Taking the opportunity of institutional setup and based upon 5100m2new teaching and office buildings,the School of Education has entered into a period of rapid development since 2000. Since then,the School of Education was approved for operating Doctorial Program in Educational Economy & Management in 2003, National Key Discipline of Higher Education in 2007, Center for Post-doctorial Studies in 2007, one of the first Pilot Units of Education PhD in 2009, and First-level Discipline Doctorial Program in 2011.

So far,the School of Education has established Research Institute of Higher Education, Research Institute of Institutions, Research Institute of Educational Economy, Research Institute of Education, Research Institute of Psychology, Editorial Office of Research on Higher Education, and Editorial Office of Research in Higher Education of Engineering; has set up Research Center for Institutional Development, Research Center for Regional Higher Educational Development, HUST’s Think-Tank Institute of Higher Education Development Policies, Research Center for Innovative Education & Critical Thinking, Analysis & Consulting Center for Teaching and Learning Big Data of Chinese Universities.We recruit and cultivate Academic Doctorial Candidates in 4 Second-level Disciplines of Higher Education, Educational Economy & Management, Principles of Education and Educational Psychology; Education PhD in Educational Leadership & Management and Students Development & Education; Academic Master’s Candidates in 5 Second-level Disciplines of Higher Education, Educational Economy & Management, Principles of Education, Curriculum & Teaching Methodology and Educational Psychology;Full-time Master of Education in Educational Management and Education of Science & Technology; andNon-full-time Master of Education in Educational Management.

Adhering to the path of development toward educational disciplines different from normal universities, and focusing on exploring the experiences of science and engineering in the development of educational disciplines,the School of Education, as a domestic leader of research in the cultural quality education of college students, is the Chairman and Secretary General Units of Steering Committee of Culture-based Quality Education forUniversityStudents of the Ministry of Education.As a domestic pioneer advocating research in institutional research,the School of Education has founded and established Society of Research of Universities of China Association of Higher Education.In 1986,the School of Education created China’s first platform for communications of research in higher education (Seminar on National College Educational Thoughts). Since the end of 2010, The School of Education has taken charge of Professional Committee of Higher Education of China Association of Higher Education, and made fruitful achievements in promoting international and domestic academic exchanges.

Full-time Academic Doctoral Program in Education (for International Students)

Goals and objectives

This program is designed to cultivate senior talents who abide by academic ethics and academic standards, develop morally, intellectually, physically, socially and aesthetically, and engage in pedagogical research in an all-round way. Students should master solid and comprehensive basic theories and systematic and in-depth knowledge of pedagogy, have the ability to independently engage in pedagogical research and make innovative achievements.

Graduates of this program should be able to:

1.Master solid and comprehensive basic theories and systematic and in-depth pedagogical knowledge of pedagogy, and to understand the dynamics of pedagogical development at home and abroad as well as the knowledge of related disciplines;

Research Training and Practical Training Requirements

1.Cultivation Guidance and Cultivation Program

Doctoral students should adhere to the correct political direction, adhere to the rigorous scientific attitude, have a good scientific spirit, and strictly abide by the academic norms and academic ethics.

The supervisor is responsible for the cultivation of doctoral students, and the supervisor is the first person responsible for the cultivation of postgraduates. The supervisor is the first person responsible for the cultivation of postgraduates. The supervisory team of doctoral students, headed by the supervisor of doctoral students, is responsible for the cultivation, guidance and assessment of doctoral students.

The individual cultivation plan of doctoral students shall be formulated by the supervisor of the doctoral students within one month after the commencement of the semester according to the cultivation plan of the discipline, taking into account the conditions of cultivation, research directions and personal characteristics of the doctoral students. In the cultivation plan, the inter-disciplinary courses chosen shall not be the same as those studied during the master's degree, and the students must attend the inter-disciplinary courses and take the examination (assessment) in the same class.

2.Qualification Examination

The qualifying examination for doctoral students is a comprehensive examination of disciplines before they officially enter the research stage of the dissertation. The qualifying examination is mandatory for doctoral degree students and master's degree students. The qualification examination focuses on whether the doctoral students have mastered a solid and broad foundation and expertise in the disciplines, whether they can comprehensively apply such knowledge to analyze and solve problems, and whether they have the ability to carry out innovative research work. After passing the qualification examination, students can apply for the opening and defense of the dissertation. Direct PhD and Master's degree students shall complete the qualification examination organized by the College in the third and fourth semesters. Specific requirements are listed in the "Regulations for the Implementation of Qualification Examination for Doctoral Candidates of the School of Education".

3.Proposal defense and proposal report

Under the guidance of the supervisor, the doctoral students shall, according to the selected research fields and the requirements of the dissertation topic, review the relevant literature (not less than 60 articles) and write a literature review report; they shall decide on the topic of the dissertation, and make defense on the purpose and significance of the topic, the overview of the relevant literature, the contents of the study, the expected study goals, the research plan, and so on. The doctoral candidates can only be formally entered into the stage of doctoral dissertation study after passing the examination and defense of the dissertation proposal.

The defense of dissertation proposal is usually completed in the third semester and at the latest in the fourth semester, and students who pass the defense will be awarded one credit. The specific requirements are also listed in the "Regulations for the Implementation of Graduate Student Dissertation Opening Report of the School of Education".

A doctoral student who fails to pass the dissertation proposal defense can only apply for reopening the dissertation proposal after three months. The period between the passing of the dissertation proposal opening and the application for the dissertation defense shall not be less than 18 months.

4.Interim assessment and interim progress report

When the dissertation topic reaches the middle stage (about one year after the selection of the research topic), the doctoral student shall make a progress report to the relevant experts of the discipline, report the progress of the dissertation study work, put forward the plans and measures for the next stage, and submit a written interim report to the participants for deliberation, and those who have passed the interim report will be awarded one credit. For the specific requirements, please refer to the "Regulations for the Implementation of Interim Assessment for Graduate Students of the School of Education".

Doctoral students who pass the interim assessement can continue to carry out the research work of the dissertation. Doctoral students who fail in the interim assessement shall not be allowed to take the interim assessement again until three months later. The total number of interim assessement shall not exceed three times. Doctoral students who fail in the interim assessement for three times shall be separated from the university in accordance with the relevant regulations of the university.

5.Annual Progress Report

Doctoral students shall submit annual progress reports at the end of each academic year. The college will organize a special assessment team to evaluate the annual progress report and give suggestions for quality improvement and diversion.

6.Academic Activities

Doctoral students shall participate in at least 4 academic conferences at home and abroad, all kinds of academic forums (or seminars) at school level or college level, and make at least 2 academic reports during the period of pursuing doctoral degree. After each academic activity, doctoral students shall record the content of the report and other related information in a unified form of record book prescribed by the school, which shall be signed by the host of the activity. Doctoral students shall submit the record book to the Sub-committee of Academic Degree Evaluation before applying for the dissertation review, and the corresponding credits will be granted only after they are approved.

Requirements for Dissertation and Creative Outcomes

1.The topic of the doctoral dissertation should belong to the basic research, applied basic research or applied research in the related research direction of education, and have important academic significance or applied value for the development of the discipline or the social needs.

2.The content of the dissertation should reflect that the author has broad basic theories and systematic and in-depth specialized knowledge in the discipline of education, and has a broad understanding of the cutting-edge dynamics and development trend of the researched field.

3.The dissertation should be based on the author's creative thinking and the main research results should be innovative. The innovative results of doctoral students during their study for the degree can be presented in various forms. Before applying for the degree, they should meet the requirements for innovative research results in the "Quality Standards for Doctoral Students Applying for the Degree of the School of Education", and the main innovative outcome (papers) published are related to the dissertation.

4.The dissertation shall follow the "Regulations for Writing Doctoral and Master's Degree Dissertations of Huazhong University of Science and Technology", be systematic and complete, clearly expressed, rigorously argued, accurately and comprehensively cited, and standardized in writing.

5.Doctoral students shall complete the first draft of the dissertation and pass the supervisor's examination and the pre-defense organized by the college before they can submit it to the university for blind review by internal and external experts. The pre-defense shall be conducted in the form of formal defense, focusing on whether the dissertation reaches the level of doctoral dissertation as well as the dissertation format and content arrangement, and the pre-defense committee shall make a decision on whether to send the dissertation to the university for review or not. The dissertation that fails in the pre-defense shall not be sent out for review.

6.Only after the dissertation has passed the review can the college and the supervisor organize the dissertation defense and qualification examination in accordance with the Regulations on the Awarding of Academic Degrees at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The dissertation defense and qualification examination of doctoral degree shall be organized by the School together with the supervisor in accordance with the Regulations of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Requirements for Graduation and Completion and Award of Degrees

The requirements for graduation, completion and degree conferment of doctoral students are in accordance with the Regulations of Huazhong University of Science and Technology on the Administration of Graduate Students' Academic Records, the Implementing Rules of Huazhong University of Science and Technology on the Administration of Graduate Students' Academic Records, and the Regulations on the Awarding of Academic Degrees at Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Other Requirements

Students are encouraged to take physical education courses to develop the habit of physical exercise and to maintain their physical and mental health. Other requirements shall be implemented with reference to the relevant regulations of the university.
